The resolution was adopted yesterday by the 192-member General Assembly to commemorate the Nobel Peace Prize laureate’s long-standing commitment to promoting conflict resolution, race relations, human rights, reconciliation and gender equality.

The Day will be observed annually on 18 July, Mr. Mandela’s birthday, starting in 2010 when the former anti-apartheid leader will turn 92 years old.

By adopting the resolution, the UN expressed its appreciation for a great man who had suffered for the sake of people everywhere, said Assembly President Ali Treki, recognizing Mr. Mandela’s 27-year imprisonment, most of which was spent in the notorious Robben Island detention centre off the coast of Cape Town.

After his release from prison in 1990, Mr. Mandela became the first President elected in a fully representative democratic ballot in post-apartheid South Africa, holding office from 1994 to 1999 in accordance with the country’s Constitution.

At an event marking his 91st birthday this year, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that “Nelson Mandela is a living embodiment of the highest values of the United Nations.”

The Tesla Memorial Society of New York and Tesla Forum (Tesla Society of Australia) proposed to the previous General Secretary of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, in the year of 2002 to proclaim through the United Nations - "Nikola Tesla Day" on July 10 (Tesla's birthday).

The government of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia proclaimed July 10th, "Nikola Tesla Day". The Proclamation was announced in July 2002. "Nikola Tesla Day", July 10th, will be celebrated every year in Yugoslavia as a "Day of science, progress and brotherhood among all nations and religions".

"Nikola Tesla Day" signifies a day of science, progress and brotherhood among all nations and religions around the world. This will be an international day celebrated by people all around the globe, remembering Tesla's work and his contribution to humanity.

".. in order for any proposal to be considered by the members of the United Nations, an item must first be presented by an offical representative of a Member State, duly inscribed on the Organizations's agenda and voted by the Membership. You may therefore wish to redirect your propsoal to your country's representative office before the United Nations."

Unfortunately, the efforts of the Tesla Memorial Society of New York and the Tesla Forum (Tesla Society of Australia) to find a nation accredited by the UN to propose "Nikola Tesla Day" to the General Assembly were unsuccessful so far.
